The (Not So) Definitive Ranking of Disney and Pixar Animated Classics – A Summary

To recap the full list of 80 films reviewed in the previous pieces, here is a simplified list for quick viewing without all the commentary. List begins here for the full version.

Colour-coding relates to “eras” in Disney Animation history (Pixar films grouped alongside Disney films of that period)

Red: Golden Age / Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to Bambi (1942) / The start of Disney Animation Studios until the war effort restricts their resources

Orange: Wartime / Saludos Amigos (1942) to The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) / Disney during WWII and the post-war period; marked by propaganda work and compilation works pieced together from unfinished projects with minimal staff and budget

Yellow: Silver Age / Cinderella (1950) to Sleeping Beauty (1959) / Studio rebounds with success, but an aging staff and artistic differences lead to studio changes

Green: Bronze Age / One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) to The Great Mouse Detective (1986) / Walt focuses on his theme park projects and the Nine Old Men give way to a new generation, but several major animators depart (Don Bluth) to form a competing studio

Blue: Renaissance / Oliver & Company (1988) to Tarzan (1999) / Arguably the greatest animation period in studio history, Disney captures lightning in a bottle with a revamped animation style and Broadway-style format pioneered by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman

Purple: Post-Renaissance / Toy Story 2 (1999) to Up (2009) / With the success of Toy Story and managerial changes at Disney, the animation studio begins experimenting with computer animation with mixed results as the Pixar legacy grows

Pink: Revival / The Princess and the Frog (2009) to Moana (2016) / Disney finds its stride with computer animation and ushers in a new age of consistent hits while Pixar introduces a mix of new titles and sequels to its canon

Black: Post-Revival / Cars 3 (2017) to Today / Coco and Onward aside, the studios seem to hit pause on new titles and release a series of sequels to existing titles as the company continues to release a stream of live action remakes of animated classics
